5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

by- Mollie Busino, LCSW

Most of those who know me know that I am not the biggest fan of the winter. I hate the cold, ice, grayness, annoying large winter coat, and parking spots being occupied by piles of snow. However, I was determined this winter to combat the negative feelings surrounding the season. Here are the five ways I’m doing it:

  1. Set an Intention: Setting an intention that this winter will bring joy, gratitude, and peace will set one’s mindset in the direction of positivity rather than focused on only the negative aspects.
  2. Bucket List: Creating a list of activities to do in the winter decreases boredom and invites new experiences. If one is not a fan of outdoor winter activities then they can choose indoor experiences such as visiting museums, attending a show, and an art or cooking class.
  3. Connect with Others: Scheduling date nights or plans with friends ahead of time will decrease feelings of isolation.
  4. Move your Body: Getting at least 15 to 20 minutes a day of physical activity such as a fitness video or class, yoga at home, or simply dancing around will improve mood and physical health.
  5. Self Care Routine: Starting a routine that focuses on one’s well-being creates such a calm and grounded foundation. This can include daily 10 minute meditation, healthy bedtime routine, epsom salt bath weekly, face mask, or reading a book or listening to podcast that empowers you.

If you are also someone that typically counts down the minutes until the winter ends then try these 5 efforts for creating a winter that you may enjoy rather than dread!
